2009

The IFFS/AFS 2009 saw a healthy attendance of 15,606 trade visitors from 118 countries, solid testimony of the strength and liveliness of the furniture trade industry in Singapore and the region. Covering six halls with a gross area of 60,000 square metres at the Singapore Expo, the fair showcased a fascinating array of quality, well-designed furniture from 471 Asian and international exhibitors from 33 countries. With more than 100,000 pieces of furniture and furnishing products, IFFS/AFS 2009 offered unparalleled variety and quality buying opportunities, making it truly Asia’s one-stop sourcing haven. At the four-day event held from 9 to 12 March, a total of 104 overseas buying delegations from 38 different countries visited the fair.

Design also took centre stage at IFFS/AFS this year, with the highly successful return of the expanded PLATFORM showcase and display of the top entries in the Furniture Design Award 2009 and 5th FL!P Challenge. The Furniture Design Forum 2009, held in conjunction with the fair on 11 March invited Mr Karim Rashid, the prolific designer of Karim Rashid Inc as the keynote speaker and wowed the 439 participants with his design insights and inspirations.


2008

The IFFS/AFS 2008 recorded an impressive attendance of 18,361 trade visitors from over 100 countries. Spread over seven halls at the Singapore Expo, the fair showcased the best of Asian and international furniture to great success. A truly record-breaking event, IFFS/AFS 2008 has already established itself as the largest in its 25-year history. This year, the fair played host to a record number of 517 exhibitors from 33 countries, with two of the largest booths occupying 900 square metres each. Over 60,000 pieces of furniture and furnishings were on display at the fair, strengthening IFFS/AFS’ reputation as a one-stop Asia-wide sourcing platform for high-quality furniture and furnishings in a myriad of styles. In terms of exhibition space, IFFS/AFS 2008 was upped by 12 per cent with 44,000 square metres of nett space as compared to 2007 edition.

The stellar figures achieved have once again proven that the IFFS/AFS is recognised as the best trade furniture show in Asia for quality furniture coupled with trend-setting designs. The bar has been set for an even better show next year, and with continuous bid to excel, IFFS/AFS 2009 will surpass these high standards.


2007

IFFS/AFS 2007 ends on a high note with USD 240 million in spot orders and with an additional USD 2.1 billion of follow-on sales to be expected as a result of the opportunities secured at the fair. Once again, the best and varied mix of Asian furniture designs coupled with the participation of high-quality international exhibitors contributed to the success of the event which generated approximately USD 38 million in economic spin-offs for Singapore’s Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) and tourism sectors.

IFFS/AFS 2007 achieved an attendance of 17,322 trade visitors from 117 countries at the recent five-day event. Amongst the visitors, there were 66 buying delegations from 17 countries. In terms of the scale of the fair, IFFS/AFS 2007 was the largest in its 24-year history, providing a useful platform for the forging of an unprecedented number of potential global trade partnerships. It hosted a record 510 exhibitors from 28 countries of which, many had increased their exhibition space. This resulted in the show being 10.7 percent bigger than 2006 with 60,000 square metres in gross space (or 39,300 square metres in nett space) spread across all six halls at the Singapore Expo.

In addition, IFFS/AFS 2007 provided a breath of fresh air when it came to match-making between designers and manufacturers with a total of 92 first-to-market furniture prototypes by young designers from the region who took part in various design initiatives including the annual Furniture Design Award, FL!P Challenge and the inaugural PLATFORM.


2006

IFFS/AFS 2006 has again proven to be an excellent business conduit for the international furniture trade fraternity in Asia. The fair generated a record yield of estimated USD 240 million of spot orders over the five-day event from 1 to 5 March at the Singapore Expo occupying 35,500 sqm of nett space. The event is also expected to garner an additional USD 2.1 billion of follow-on sales for the year ahead.

Registering the highest exhibitor and visitor count in its 23-year history, with 505 exhibitors from 29 countries and 17,838 trade participants from 112 countries, IFFS/AFS 2006 has also, in turn, garnered an estimated USD 32 million in revenue and economic spin-offs for Singapore’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) and tourism industries.

To consolidate its leadership position amongst Asian shows, IFFS/AFS developed a distinct focus in design and creativity with feature on Furniture Design Award 2006, 4th Furniture Design Forum, 2nd Design Gallery and FL!P Challenge.


2005

SFIC and MP International join hands to expand furniture exhibition business. The SFIC announced on 4 July 2005 the start-up of a new company – the International Furniture Fair Singapore Pte Ltd (IFFS Pte Ltd) – and sold a 40% share of the company to MP International Pte Ltd (MP). IFFS Pte Ltd will focus on organising furniture and furniture-related exhibitions and events. SFIC will transfer the organising of its flagship furniture trade show – the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) – to the new company. SFIC, as the majority shareholder will own 60% of the company.

IFFS/AFS 2005 lived up to its reputation as the “Best Furniture Show in Asia” with 475 exhibitors from 34 countries showcasing more than 30,000 pieces of furniture and furnishing products. It was also well-attended by 17,535 trade visitors from 112 countries.

The event also featured the annual Furniture Design Award (FDA) 2005, Furniture Design Forum, Design Gallery and the inaugural FL!P Challenge 2005.


2004

IFFS/AFS 2004 recorded robust sales and was a resounding success with 450 exhibitors from 29 countries, spread over more than 50,000 sqm and attracted 17,126 buyers from 102 countries.


2003

IFFS/AFS 2003 concluded on a high note with 516 exhibitors from 30 countries and 16,338 buyers from 102 countries, spanning over 55,000 sqm of the exhibition halls.

Rebranded Furniture Design Award to take on a larger profile to include international entries where a reservoir of budding design talents were nurtured and groomed to realize their full potential.

Launched the 1st Furniture Design Forum during IFFS/AFS 2003 to enhance Singapore’s profile as a design hub with more design exchanges.


2002

Launched the OFFICE and KITCHEN at IFFS/AFS with strategic partner, KolnMesse International (KMI).


2001

IFFS/AFS 2001 was spread over 50,000 sqm and broke the sales and participation record with 17,011 trade visitors and 645 exhibitors.


2000


IFFS/AFS 2000 achieved record sales and participation. The millennium show occupied 40,000 sqm of exhibition area, attracted 16,513 buyers from 101 countries and 559 exhibitors from 25 countries.

IFFS/AFS 2000 also included for the first time a Soft Furnishings and Home Accessories section and a Furniture IT segment.

In the 1990s

1999

IFFS/AFS 1999, the maiden event at the newly opened Singapore Expo at Changi, achieved an impressive record if 15,688 buyers from 104 countries and 460 exhibitors from 22 countries despite the regional economic upheaval.

The Singapore government recognized IFFS/AFS’ role in promoting trade within the region and internationally by further classifying the fair as one of the seven Mega Trade Events in Singapore.


1998

IFFS/AFS became the 1st international furniture fair in Asia to be accepted as a member of the prestigious Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), a Paris-based international bodyof trade fair organizers, in October 1998. Its endorsement is testimonial to the quality and high standards of the fair.


1997


IFFS/AFS became the 2nd largest annual trade show in Singapore, which occupied 38,000 sqm of exhibition area and attracted 408 exhibitors from 25 countries and 15,193 buyers from 85 countries.

Launched an intensive marketing programme to reposition Singapore furniture in international markets. The programme theme was “Worldclass Designs, Made in Asia, Sold to the World”.


1992

The Singapore Furniture Export Show was renamed the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) and endorsed as “Approved International Fair” by the Singapore government, with the long-range goal of developing it into a mega trade event of similar stature as those held worldwide.

IFFS/AFS 1992 witnessed a 100% growth as compared to 1989. It attracted 163 participants from 10 countries and occupied an exhibition area of 16,000 sqm.

In the 1980s

1989

Debut of the Singapore Furniture Export Show, which was held in conjunction with AFS. The Show occupied 8,000 sqm of exhibition area and attracted 82 exhibitors from 4 ASEAN countries.

Debut of the 1st Furniture Design Competition to groom local young aspiring designers and contribute to the development of Singapore as the hub for design and interior furnishing in Asia.


1988

Singapore was selected as the permanent site for the ASEAN Furniture Show, of which SFIC is the organiser and permanent Secretariat for AFFMA.


1983

Organised the Singapore International Furniture Show 1983, which was held in conjunction with the 2nd ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS). The event tripled in size.

When we first began

1981


Formed under the aegis of Singapore Manufacturers’ Association, SFIC was inaugurated on 10 July 1981 as the official representative body of furniture manufacturers and exporters in Singapore.

It also represented Singapore in the ASEAN Federation of Furniture Manufacturers Association (AFFMA) as a constituent member.
